Program: The Cross Community Coalition Family Resource Center is a non-profit community center providing social services to the Swansea/Elyria/Globeville Communities in North Denver. These communities developed prior to WWII adjacent to the industrial areas northeast of downtown Denver. During the 1960's, as the neighborhood was experiencing a decline like most inner-city neighborhoods, the elevated portion of I-70 was built and divided the communities and, as a result, hastened the decline.
The community became the repository of the largest superfund site in the City of Denver. By the 1980's, the community had a majority of poor Hispanic families. Cross Community Family Resource Center was formed to assist the poor working families in the communities.
The Center began in a storefront at 46th and Josephine in the shadow of the elevated I-70. In 1999, Cross embarked on a capital fund-raising drive to build a new center. In 2001, they hired The Abo Group to design a new facility at 48th Avenue and Columbine Street.
The spirit of the facility is to welcome people from the community and to encourage interaction and visibility as an added enhancement to the neighborhood.
